With her Scandinavian brand of indie rock, this raucous performer is sure to have a bright, freaky and fabulous future ahead of her. October 12, 2007 3:05 PM
It has been said in some quarters that Norwegian rock sensation Ida Maria, whose debut single Oh My God has just been released in the UK on her own Nesna label, promises to be the next big thing. Having interviewed her for my weekly column at The Beat, Notes from Underground, I'm prepared to stick my neck out and say this woman has what it takes.
With her high energy, anarchic and undeniably Scandinavian brand of indie rock, the ballsy, beautiful young firebrand from a tiny town in the far north of Norway is a breath of fresh air who is certain to illuminate this autumn's music scene with her distinctive brand of riveting, emotional and memorable music. Ida's first single is a foot-stomping piece of pop perfection, in turns mesmerising, infuriating, but most importantly of all, extremely infectious
23-year-old Ida was born in the idyllic setting of Nesna on the northern coast of Norway, whose minuscule population amounts to less than 2000, and whose backdrop of mountains and sea is a million miles away from rock'n'roll. When I asked if she thought growing up in a small town inspired her to get out and do something with her life, she replied:
"Probably! Not much happened where I grew up. For instance the local village cinema could offer just one or two films a month, and they always came out three months after they were shown in the big cities. You have a lot of time and space and quite selective influences that you just have to make the most out of."
This answer in itself is very telling, for while some kids in the big cities seem intent on killing each other or destroying themselves with drugs, others out in the middle of nowhere are busy creating their own little worlds of art and music. But whether her environment shaped her creative tendencies is almost irrelevant, for what matters is Ida is a woman with courage, someone you'd want to take home to meet your parents, a woman who knows which way the wind blows. Fiercely intelligent, she is a natural performer whose stage presence is undeniable.
After establishing herself on Sweden's nascent rock scene, and taking her homeland, Norway, by storm earlier this year, it looks like the rest of the world will soon be searching out Ida to see what is going on inside her head. Variously described as a cross between Liam Gallagher, her hero Iggy Pop and the elfin Icelander Bjork, she has already carved out a reputation as a raucous performer, and her hyperactive stage shows have been going down a storm, with head-buttings and attempted cannibalism being some of the more interesting highlights. With catchy songs, like Oh My God, Louie, Better When You're Naked, and the boozy balled, Any Given Day, she's sure to have a bright, freaky and fabulous future ahead of her.

Ida Maria @ Academy 3Chris Gilliver
2/ 6/2008
THERE are two Ida Marias. There's the one who appears on record, good, very good, but almost indistinguishable from the hordes of guitar bands that are overwhelming the territory of popular music.
And then there is the one who appears live here tonight, or indeed any night: unbelievably charismatic, cool, sexy, arrogant, self-effacing, talented, absorbing and captivating.
One of the best performers of her or any generation surely destined for superstardom with a mildly husky, versatile, stunning, jazzy voice set to a backdrop of violently exaggerated indie rock.
It is a shame then that Academy 3 is only three quarters full tonight. It deserves to be more claustrophobic than being buried alive. A quick scan of the room shows up a real age range, middle-aged couples to kids, surprising for such rockular music.
She appears with her band on stage at 10pm wearing her trademark top hat.
She looks like a conjuror, but there are no cheap tricks to be found here. This is the real thing, the musical equivalent of pulling an elephant out of a hat, impossible and totally overwhelming.
And then they rock out like the rock gods that they are.
With complete self-confidence the whole band strut, twitch, shake and jerk their way through one of the best gigs this reviewer has ever seen. Ida swears, tears and lacerates her voice through the harder tracks, and hazily croons through the quieter ones.
In reality her voice is more captivating in the slower tracks, but if she did just the slow numbers she would be another Katie Melua, and she is so much more.
Rapturous
Her latest single Queen of the World is rapturous, and at its end someone from the audience hands her a bunch of flowers. "I've never had flowers before", she says clearly charmed before singing, "Leave me bleeding on the floor".
Very odd juxtaposition, and you can understand why she has never received flowers before.
Laughing she notes that, "There's a lot of love and a lot of hate in this room tonight". More love than hate I think.
After Forgive Me, quite the comedian, she jokes, "People think we're drunk all the time, it's not true. We just have a very high tolerance".
I come across them in a bar later that night... they're drinking.
Stella sees a fantastic jazzy vocal closing, and when they play You Keep Me Warm the audience is swaying in unison with Ida, their faces fixed with wide-eyed half smiles. I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked is a classic comedy sing-along.
Ida pours a bottle of water on her head, shakes it off and launches into last track Oh My God. It is absolutely amazing, and the perfect climax to a perfect night. Perennial encore closer We Are All Going To Hell is a classic full stop. We're all more than happy to follow Ida into the fiery furnace.
After the gig I catch the teenage girl who gave Ida the flowers. "I want to marry her,” she says with complete seriousness...don't we all!

If she can bridge the gap, and transpose her live antics onto record she really will be Queen of the World, booze or no booze.

British singing sensation Leona Lewis appears on the cover the July issue of Blender magazine. Blender magazine declares Leona Lewis as a star to watch and says " Look out Mariah Leona Lewis is Pop's Next Megastar." Leona Lewis made history when her album debuted at number 1 in the US. We wonder how Mariah Carey is going to take the news that Leona Lewis is supposed to be the next "It" girl. Mariah Carey had a feud with Jennifer Lopez. Mariah even accused JLO of copying her fashion style and singing like her when she suggested Jennifer Lopez stole her music . Leona Lewis is obviously copying Mariah Carey's fashion style and singing style. Leona Lewis even did one photoshoot where she was wearing the exact same clothing as Mariah Carey. Leona wore a low cut tube top, tight pants and even wore a similar belly chain. Can anyone say that Leona's stylist wasn't a copycat and it was a mistake she was dressed this way?
Mariah had flipped out when Jennifer Lopez was copying her and stealing Mimi's spotlight. Remember when poor Mariah Carey had a nervous breakdown and went crazy on national tv? Mariah freaked out in 2001 on TRL and had to check into a mental facility a few days later to get help. Click here to watch the episode. Mad TV did a spoof of the Mariah Carey breakdown episode.
Leona Lewis claims she's not going to be wearing any Mariah Carey microskirts. We just think it's a matter of time before Leona starts dressing more like Mariah and wearing miniskirts too. Here's what she says in the July issue of Blender Magazine.
“I don’t wear little miniskirts and low-cut tops. If you want to show your bits off, it’s up to you. … When I was 18, I had a few glasses of Alcopop — they’re bubblegummy drinks with a bit of alcohol — and it was gross. I’ve tasted champagne, which is gross. And I taste d wine, which I don’t like,” Leona tells the music mag.
Mariah Carey says people call her a "ditzy moron" but she would have a valid argument if she said X-Factor winner Leona Lewis was obviously copying her style. Maybe Mariah Carey will even pretend she doesn't even know who Leona Lewis is during her interviews. Watch this interview where Mariah Carey claims she loves Beyonce but she doesn't know Jennifer Lopez.

RIHANNA is all set to make pop chart history in America on Thursday (15May08) when she becomes the female artist with the biggest jump to number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
Her Take a Bow is expected to rocket to the top of the singles chart from a lowly 53, thanks to a whopping 267,000 digital download sales.
The song's jump is the second-best leap to the top, trailing only Rihanna's duet partners Maroon 5 who scored a number one with Makes Me Wonder a year ago (May08) after a 63-position hike from 64.
Rihanna's collaboration with Maroon 5 on If I Never See Your Face Again is expected to be one of the new charts highest debuts when the official countdown is released.

BRITNEY SPEARS' cousin and former assistant ALLI SIMS has dismissed reports the troubled singer has a drug problem.
Sims insists speculation the Toxic singer was under the influence of drugs during a stand-off with police at her Beverly Hills, California mansion earlier this month (Jan08) is untrue. She says, "If something (drug-related about Spears) was to come out, I would definitely be shocked. "I was with her for eight months pretty much every day and never witnessed anything like that - and I lived there (with her)." Spears was taken to Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center following the incident at her Beverly Hills, California home, on 4 January (08) when she refused to hand over her youngest son to her ex-husband Kevin Federline's minder. Pop star CHRISTINA AGUILERA is revelling in her new role as a mum, but is still suffering from the pain of childbirth.
The Beautiful singer and her husband Jordan Bratman welcomed little
Max Liron Bratman into the world at 10.05pm on Saturday (12Jan08) after doctors at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center delivered the baby via caesarian section.
But Aguilera is reportedly still "really sore" six days after the
birth. A source tells E! News, "It (childbirth) was more painful than she thought." However, the source adds the 27-year-old star - who is now resting at her Beverly Hills home - has not let her discomfort stop her from singing lullabies to the tot.
And after spending months refusing to confirm or deny her pregnancy last year (07), Aguilera has also decided to keep photographs of her newborn under wraps - she's allegedly turned down an offer in excess of $1 million (£500,000) from America's OK! magazine to secure the rights to the baby's first cover shot.
