Opening Night: Cherien Dabis’s “Amreeka”
Closing Night: Lee Daniels’s “Push: Based on a Novel by Sapphire”
Presented by The Museum of Modern Art and The Film Society of Lincoln Center,
March 25 – April 5
NEW YORK—The 25 feature films that will make up New Directors/New Films 2009 were announced today by Rajendra Roy, chief curator of film at The Museum of Modern Art and Richard Peña, program director at The Film Society of Lincoln Center. Representing 20 countries, the titles in the 39th edition of this celebrated program dedicated to the discovery and support of emerging directors will screen in their New York premieres or, in some cases, their United States and world premieres. Many filmmakers and special guests will appear on stage at series screenings, held at MoMA and The Film Society of Lincoln Center, March 25 – April 5.
New York-based director Cherien Dabis’s debut feature “Amreeka” will be honored as the 2009 Opening Night selection. The humanist and humorous drama stars Haifa-trained actress Nisreen Faour and Hiam Abbas (“The Visitor,” “Lemon Tree”) in the story of Muna, a single mother from Ramallah, and Fadi, her teenage son, who move to Middle America just as U.S. troops enter Baghdad. Their bittersweet adjustment to a multicultural way of life provides a revelatory vision of a mother-son relationship set against the strange behavior of those “ordinary people” who treat them as outsiders.
Lee Daniels’s Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize-winner “Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire” will also be showcased as the series’s first-ever Closing Night feature. The much-discussed drama chronicles the world of Precious Jones, an overweight, functionally illiterate, lonesome teenager pregnant with a second child by her own father. Daniels, working with a script by Damien Paul and an extraordinary cast led by Gabourey Sidibe and including Mo’Nique, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, and Paula Patton, creates a vibrant, engaging story of imposing character and unlikely survival.
Other features of the 2009 festival slate include the world premiere of Bob Byington’s slacker ex-love story “Harmony and Me” and the U.S. premiere of Adam Del Deo and James D. Stern’s inside look at the Broadway revival of “A Chorus Line,” “Every Little Step.” First-time feature director Sophie Barthes gathers a remarkable cast— including Paul Giamatti, Emily Watson, and David Strathairn—in her existential comedy thriller “Cold Souls.”
The series will offer New Yorkers an exclusive first chance to see 2009 Sundance favorites including National Geographic photographer Louie Psihoyos’s “The Cove;” Sterlin Harjo “Barking Water;” Gustave de Kervern and Benoît Deléphin’s “Louise-Michel;” Sebastián Silva’s “The Maid;” Laurel Nakadate’s “Stay the Same Never Change;” Alexis Dos Santos’s “Unmade Beds;” and Ondi Timoner’s “We Live in Public,” an insightful and resourceful documentary exploration of Internet pioneer Josh Harris's raise and fall within the art and technology whirlwind of 1990s Manhattan. Venice Film Festival prizewinners “Mid-August Lunch” by Gianni Di Gregorio and “Paper Soldier” by Aleksei German Jr. are also among the many stellar new features highlighted in the slate.
Dedicated to the discovery and support of emerging artists, New Directors/New Films has earned an international reputation as the premier festival for works that break or re-cast the cinematic mold.
The series is presented by The Museum of Modern Art and The Film Society of Lincoln Center and supported by The Junior Associates of The Museum of Modern Art and The Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Young Friends of Film.
The work of The Film Society of Lincoln Center is made possible by the generous support of the Irene Diamond Fund, 42 Below, Stella Artois®, Illy, and public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.
The Museum of Modern Art's film programs are made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
The complete public schedule for New Directors/New Films 2009 will be announced in early March. Tickets will go on sale Friday, March 13. They will be at The Film Society of Lincoln Center, MoMA, and online at filmlinc.com.

Sundance continues until January 25th with the 25th anniversary celebration of the indie festival. Nia Long joined Chris Rock who premiered his new documentary "Good Hair" which is in competition. Mariah Carey and her hubby Nick Cannon both went indie with starring roles in films at the festival.
It's seem like anybody who is on the A-list party hopped at Sundance and headed out of town to Washington D.C to attend Barack Obama's historic inauguration.
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon walked the red carpet at Sundance then jetted to the Inauguration.
Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore attended the Park City premiere of Ashton's sexy gigolo flick "Spread". Dashmi were spotted in D.C. at the Entertainment Industry Foundation "A New Era of Service" Breakfast at Ballou Senior High School with Tobey Maguire and Martin Luther King III.
The Sundance Film Festival wouldn't be complete without an annual cameo appearance by party gal heiress Paris Hilton.
The Hollywood Reporter made some predicitons and is now reporting that sales are stuck at Sundance with lukewarm receptions for Wesley Snipes and Don Cheadle's "Brooklyn's Finest". Click here for more celebrity Sundance photos...
The Sundance sales market took a brief spin around the
ballroom this weekend, even as many of its larger players
maintained their recent positions along the wall.
WMA and CAA engineered a low- to mid-seven-figure sale of Antoine
Fuqua's police drama "Brooklyn's Finest," with upstart Senator
Distribution and partner Sony buying North Americans rights to the
Millennium Films project. The purchase was a rarity in the current
film-fest market: a decisive offer that culminated in a less than
24 hours after a movie premiered.
But the "Finest" deal failed to ignite a larger sales frenzy, with
some of the specialty world's biggest players, including Focus and
Fox Searchlight, yet to make serious noise in Park City.
And a number of the most expectation-laden titles that premiered
over the weekend -- which included the Ashton Kutcher dramedy
"Spread," Shana Feste's family-tragedy drama "The Greatest" and the
Michael Cera quasi-doc "Paper Heart" -- had not as of press time
closed a deal after their Saturday debuts.
The lack of a major sale to follow "Finest" -- which coming into
the fest was read by some as a bellwether for the sales market --
put some veterans in a pessimistic mood.
But the exec who bought the Fuqua film said little should be read
into what followed that deal. "Not all good films have a strong
identity, and those deals take a little longer to come together,"
Senator president Mark Urman said. "We were just fortunate to
encounter on the day we arrived a film that does have an identity
and fits with what we want to do." source
Has the Sundance Film Festival lost its prestige? Is it the economy, inauguration or over commercialization of Robert Redford's 25-year-old independent film festival that has alienated the A-list crowd and instead provided a playground for psuedo-celebs to pose and party for well, no real reason at all?
Pop Tarts noticed that the one woman getting most of the attention in the oddly quiet (and much warmer than normal) Park City on Saturday was none other than "Hogan Knows Best" star, Linda Bollea. So what was she doing at a film fest? Like most celebs in town, a whole lot of nothing.
Donning a terrible fur coat and pink lipstick, Bollea paraded her 19-year-old boytoy Charlie Hill up and down Main Street to fully utilize the photo op and at one point traffic controllers had to stop the cars in every direction as so many "fans" and paps were crazily rushing to get a snap of the happy-to-pose twosome. Although perhaps it was more a case of follow the pack as most snappers were asking "Who are we taking a photo of again?"
Sundance wouldn't be Sundance if perennial party-princess Paris Hilton didn't make a star-studded appearance and if you thought she was itty-bitty before, you should see her now. Super super-slim Paris flew in on the posh private ExpressJet Friday evening after hanging around the L.A hangar at a VIP cocktail party with 30 tons of real snow, accompanied by the likes of Brittany Snow (plus her co-stars in the Sundance hit "The Vicious Kind") and Demi Moore.
Moore laid low on the trip and was clearly missing her beloved Ashton Kutcher who caught ExpressJet's earlier flight into Salt Lake City. The stunning starlet used every opportunity to chat to her "Spread" star both before take-off and immediately after landing. But in the air the obviously very loved-up Ms. Moore enjoyed a beer while admiring the blown-up desktop pic of her and Kutcher touching tongues. Charming.
The majority of "celebs" strolling the Sundance streets and hitting the hotspots basically had no reason to be in town and were the likes of fired "Danity Kane" diva Aubrey O'Day, George Clooney's former flame Sarah Larson, Tila Tequila's ex Courtneay Semel (who Pop Tarts spied making out with her on-again/off-again heiress lover Casey Johnson at TAO nightclub) and even Kevin Federline's ex Shar Jackson. Shar was apparently so desperate for freebies she drove all the way up with her kids from Los Angeles just to attend the gifting lounges.
So obviously the paps were pretty pleased to finally have the opportunity to harass the slightly more famous Hilton sisters and DJ AM as they picked at their salads as the MySpace Cafe on Saturday. source

Sean "Diddy" is about to prove to the world that he is the Black James Bond. Watch Diddy's new fragrance launch with a special "I Am King" mini movie. Diddy explains that the movie is his Hollywood audition tape for the role as special agent 007. Anything is possible since Barack Obama was the first African-American to be elected as president.
Look for a cameo from Leonardo Di Caprio's former boo model Bar Raffaelli as one of the Diddy girls. We think the swimsuit wearing Diddy/Bond girls look alot like Mariah Carey did after she got her Diddy makeover in her Honey music video. There were rumors at that time that Mariah was dating Diddy but she always denied it until Mimi accused Jennifer" JLo" Lopez of copying her swag before the infamous TRL nervous breakdown incident.

R&B crooner Chris Brown took home the most awards (3) which included 'Artist Of The Year' and Favorite Soul/R&B Artist'. Other multiple winners at the event included Rihanna and Alicia Keys.
In related news, West will be releasing his fourth solo album titled 808's & Heartbreak today (November 24). The album will feature appearances from Lil Wayne, Kid Cudi and Young Jeezy. source

Chris Brown was the big winner, but it was Kanye West’s night at the American Music Awards.
Instead of his typical tantrum — a trend West started four years ago when he lost the favorite new artist prize — the rapper claimed two trophies Sunday and called on his colleagues to up their game.
“It’s our responsibility as musicians to keep pushing each other,” West said. “We will be the new Beatles, the new (Jimi) Hendrix. I want to be Elvis.”
West was named favorite male rap/hip-hop artist and his CD, “Graduation,” won favorite rap/hip-hop album.
Brown took the night’s top honors — artist of the year — as well as favorite male artist in both the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories.
“I was shocked,” the 19-year-old crooner said backstage. “I’m so thankful and grateful. I thought Coldplay should have won the award, but I’ll take it.”
Brown’s gal pal, Rihanna — who wore chains and a leather corset to perform her love ballad, “Rehab” — was named favorite female artist in both the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories. Alicia Keys was another double winner: Her CD, “As I Am,” was both pop/rock and soul/R&B album winner.
The American Music Awards traditionally centers on its performances, and Sunday was no exception. The show featured high-energy sets from Miley Cyrus, Ne-Yo and Beyonce, though a pair of lackluster medleys opened the program at the Nokia Theatre. Christina Aguilera channeled Madonna and the New Kids on the Block channeled an earlier version of themselves as each sang their latest singles and greatest hits. source

What is it with Mariah Carey? Is it because she's getting older and does want to waste any opportunity to show off her body? or will she still be dressing in skimpy outfits well into her sixties (hey, it's worked for Cher).
Carey arrived with her husband (oh my gosh they are still together!) Nick Canon on the back of a fire truck. We love Nick Canon. The fact that he's married to Mariah tends to overshadow everything about him, but if you've seen his performance in Bobby you'll know he's a great talent.

Mariah Carey is on fire! Mariah hosted a Halloween party at Marquee with her younger hubby Nick Cannon.
Mariah was working her naughty FireFighter costume. The couple continued to play dress up during the night when they wore milk and cookies outfits. Isn't love grand? L.A. Reid and producer Lee Daniels were also at the party.
Kim Kardashian was Wonder Woman at her Halloween party held at Stone Rose in Los Angeles.
Lance Bass, DWTS dancer Cheryl Burke and reality star Brittny Gastineau were some of Kim K's friends who stopped by to have fun.
Publishing Heiress Lydia Hearst-Shaw wore a costume that would have made her great grandfather William Randolph Hearst proud.
Lydia Hearst is a columnist for Page Six Magazine, which comes out in the Sunday Edition of the New York Post. Lydia also wore a Poison Ivy costume to the party. Happy Halloween.

Here is the new Mariah Carey music video directed by her husband Nick Cannon. Watch Mariah writhing around as a Vegas showgirl while wearing short shorts and playing with her hot male model boyfriend. Mariah's hubby Nick Cannon said it was hard for him to direct his wife in bed with another man.
Rapper/actor NICK CANNON struggled to direct his wife MARIAH CAREY's new video because she had to roll around in bed with another man.
Cannon admits he had no idea how hard it would be to watch his partner pretend to make love with a model right in front of him, while they were making the promo for I stay In Love together.
He says, "We did it in, like, one take and I had to kick the dude out. It was one of those situations where I wasn't intimidated but I could've knocked him out at any point.
"He was playing, like, a fictional character, but I could have done without it." But, once the awkward scene was over, Cannon admits he enjoyed directing his wife: "She's very east to work with... we had no beef at all." source

Hollywood.TV's cameras were wondering if she saw this on YouTube whether she'd hunt us down when they spotted Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon in t his exclusive clip.
The 'Touch My Body' singer and her 'Gigolo' singing husband were out seeing a movie. They opted for the George Bush Jr biopic W. They have some pretty heavy security and Mariah looks surprisingly laid back and unresponsive. She says 'Hey' in a very relaxed manner and her face doesn't move an inch. Nick shows her to the door as a true gentleman should.
So did he like the movie?
'It was cool,' he tells us.
So does he favor Obama or McCaine?
'Come on man, daft question,' he says. His vote is set.

Mariah Carey is her own replacement.
E! News has exclusively confirmed that the Grammy winner has found a different role for longtime talent manager Benny Medina and will now be representing herself.
Carey and Medina, who have worked together for more than five years, both say that they will continue to collaborate: Medina's Handprint Entertainment will continue to develop content for, and with, the singer, but Carey's own Maroon Entertainment will be managing her career.
Initial reports from outlets such as the New York Post's Page Six and the New York Daily News said Tuesday that Carey, 38, had dumped Medina, possibly Medina had been "courting" his former client (and reported Carey rival) Jennifer Lopez.
But Carey and Medina turned to E! to clear up the speculation and explain the terms of their new relationship.
"Press Reports have not been accurate," Carey said in a statement. "Benny Medina and I will continue to work together on projects both present and in the future. I'm looking forward to working with Benny on what we have been developing, and to his continued involvement in my creative life."
A source close to the situation tells E! that the revised deal is really driven by what Mariah feels is the best way to streamline her own company, Maroon Entertainment.
Medina, who recently parted ways with Usher, issued the following statement to us:
"Being as involved as I have been over the last five years, I am reminded how great teamwork leads to great success. This affords me the opportunity to work on some great projects with Mariah, including the upcoming tour, an HBO Christmas movie and a variety music show for CBS, as well as to pursue some of my other [productional] interests."
