Reducing the need for a rush to the
hospital, high-risk heart patients can stay in touch with their health
providers through telemedicine, the latest technique being used in
Dubai hospitals.
The new technology ensures that patients stay in constant touch with their health providers in case of emergencies. "They need not panic and rush to hospital fearing the worst," explained Dr Azan Binbrek, consultant cardiologist and head of Cardiology Department in Rashid Hospital.
Patient data is recorded and transmitted via landline/mobile telephone through the event recorder, a simple device which also acts and an ECG machine. The collected data is then processed and immediately relayed vie email/fax to the healthcare professional.
"Telemedical monitoring offers many advantages and new opportunities for patient management in the field of cardiology (as well as for those suffering from other chronic illnesses, including diabetes and blood pressure," he pointed out.
He said that many people, including youngsters, faced palpitations from time to time. "These may be benign in nature, but as care providers, we have to distinguish between them correctly. By the time a patient rushes to the hospital, the vital recordings needed may not be available. In this case, the event recorder plays an important role by sending the required data to a physician on time," explained Dr Binbrek.
Dr Fauz Gataby, Marketing Associate, Vitaphone ME, providers of similar German technology explains that telemedicine is already being used worldwide to monitor chronic illnesses. "A cardiac patient cannot make it to a hospital before two hours minimum. The time lapse causes gaps in proper ECG recordings," he said.Using the gadget is easy. "Place it on your chest, and press a button. The ECG will be done automatically. This data has to be transferred to a mobile or regular phone through the infrared which will convert it to a PDF file and send it to a pre-allocated number (to a healthcare provider)," says Dr Gataby.
The event recorder has a capacity to generate over 1,000 ECGs in a year. "Save time, money and precious bed space because not all chest pains are heart attacks," he added.

Well, well, well .... it's certainly about time Cedars Sinai wipe the smugness off its public face and focus in on actually serving its patients ... instead of focusing on the MONEY: The L.A. Times has found that Cedars Sinai charges up to 5 times as much as the least expensive one! What!????? Sounds like a ripoff to us!!!
California regulators have fined a Los Angeles hospital $25,000 (£12,500) for giving overdoses of a blood-thinning drug to three children, including DENNIS QUAID's newborn twins.
Following an investigation, the California Department Of Public Health concluded the failure of staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to follow their own procedures resulted in incorrect doses of Heparin being administered to children.
The report rules the overdoses were "preventable medication errors".
The Traffic actor and his wife Kimberly's babies Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace were given almost fatal overdoses of the injectable anticoagulant in November (07) - Cedars-Sinai staff gave the babies 1,000 times the normal 10-unit dose of Heparin shortly after they were born to a surrogate mother.
The Quaid twins have since recovered from the incident.

Bosses at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles have fired a dozen employees for snooping in BRITNEY SPEARS' records.
Hospital officials have suspended another six people after discovering as many as 20 staff members had attempted to defy medical centre rules and obtain confidential information about Spears, a recent patient.
The pop star was hospitalised in the facility's psychiatric ward at the beginning of last month (Feb08). Those disciplined include physicians, according to the Los Angeles Times newspaper.
The security breaches also prompted hospital officials to reveal they had also disciplined and sacked staff for looking at Spears' confidential records following the birth to her first son, Sean Preston, in 2005.
UCLA officials reveal they sent a memo to all staff when Spears was admitted to hospital, warning employees that snooping through a celebrity patient's records would be considered a violation of federal patient privacy law the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
The email read, "Please remember that any unauthorized access by a workforce member will be subject to disciplinary action, which could include termination."
The hospital officials confirm those disciplined include both medical and non-medical employees, but no doctors were targeted for firing.

DENNIS QUAID and his wife KIMBERLY are set to scare U.S. TV viewers on Sunday night (16Mar08) with terrifying statistics about America's medical mistakes.
In a taped 60 Minutes news special, the couple has spoken out about their twin babies' November (07) health battle when they were accidentally given an overdose of blood-thinning drug Heparin by staff at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
But as well as talking about their own scare - which almost cost babies Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace their lives - Quaid and his wife have opened up about the medical mishaps that lead to senseless deaths.
In the interview, Quaid insists medical mistakes are more common than people think: "They happen in every hospital... I've come to find out, there's 100,000 people a year killed... in hospitals by a medical mistakes.
"It's bigger than AIDS. It's bigger than breast cancer. It's bigger than automobile accidents and yet, no one seems to be really aware of the problem.
"We all have this inherent thing that we trust doctors and nurses, that they know what they're doing."
Quaid adds the mistake that almost cost his twins Boone and Zoe their lives "occurred right under our noses", adding, "the nurse didn't bother to look at the dosage on the bottle. It was avoidable, completely avoidable."
Good job, Dennis. It's time to expose the money-grubbing negligence of America's health care industry, that can cause you to lose your loved ones!

JACKASS star STEVE-O is on suicide watch in a Los Angeles hospital after threatening to kill himself, according to American magazine The Star.
A source close to the 33-year-old stuntman has told the tabloid Steve-O, real name Stephen Glover, was taken to the city's Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Sunday (09Mar08) after he allegedly emailed 33 suicide notes to friends.
After reportedly causing a scene in the emergency room, doctors carried out drugs tests before admitting Steve-O to the Thalians Mental Health Center and placing him on a 72-hour hold - meaning they have reason to believe he is a harm to himself or others.
That has since been extended to 14 days, according to The Star. The source tells the publication, "Steve is stabilised on meds at this point. He was also treated for burns on his skin as if he had been putting cigarettes out on his own body."
A family member is quoted telling the publication that Steve-O suffers from bipolar disorder, adding, "Right now he's in his extreme mania. His concerned friends and family are hoping he'll seek treatment."
A spokeswoman for Steve-O's agent Adam Sher said, "He doesn't offer press comments about his clients."

The German Heart Centre Bremen in Dubai Healthcare City on Monday announced that it would soon open an emergency centre for heart attack and stroke cases in cooperation with City Hospital.
The centre would be fully operational by the summer this year.
“Currently, heart attack patients in Dubai are transported to hospitals which are built for other emergencies like trauma patients, but have no established pathways or technological infrastructure and personnel for internal medicine emergencies, such as heart attacks or strokes,” said Dr Klaus Kallmayer, chairman of the German Heart Centre Bremen.
“The transportation to and preliminary treatment carried out at such hospitals are a dangerous waste of time for patients, who should be immediately brought to a specialised and dedicated 24/7 interventional cardiovascular facility,” he remarked.
“The staff using a catheterisation laboratory and treating heart attack patients must be highly trained in this specialty and must have hands-on experience.
“Heart attack patients are unstable and a huge number of unforeseeable complications can occur. As a result, cardiologists with vast experience are needed to handle these extreme situations on a 24 hour basis.”

The hospital where JENNIFER LOPEZ will give birth has been practicing drills to prevent kidnapping attempts - but denies it has anything to do with the star's scheduled stay.
Staff at North Shore Medical Center in Long Island, New York have been taking part in a Code Pink security drill, which involves locking down the hospital if a baby goes missing.
But bosses have played down kidnap fears, insisting the timing of the drill was 'coincidental.' Yeah, right!
Lopez and husband Marc Antony are reportedly expecting twins.

Actor DENNIS QUAID finds it tough to watch the climax of his new movie SMART PEOPLE because it reminds him of his newborn twins who nearly died after a drugs overdose.
At the end of the film the star, who plays an English professor struggling to get over the death of his wife, is seen cradling baby twins. And the star admits it is hard to watch the footage now after the near-death
experience of his own children.
He says, "It actually really gets me when I see this. I'm a little verklempt. Kimberly (Quaid's wife) and I weren't even pregnant when we shot (the movie). We'd been trying for three years. When I read the script a couple years ago, the end scene always got me emotionally. It made me well up. And of course having our own twins now, it really gets me verklempt. It's a wonderful thing. For me, it's just life imitating art."
Quaid's twins Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace were left fighting for their lives when they were mistakenly given 1,000 times the normal 10-unit dose of blood-thinning drug Heparin by staff at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center shortly after they were born to a surrogate mother in November (07).
The babies were eventually discharged after doctors gave them the all-clear.

LATEST: Hip-hop star NATE DOGG has been left paralysed down one side of his body after suffering a mild stroke over the festive season.
The Next Episode singer - real name Nathaniel Hale, the cousin of Snoop Dogg - was admitted to Pomona Valley Hospital in California last month (Dec07) following the cerebrovascular accident at his home on 20 December (07).
But the illness has resulted in the 39-year-old being unable to move the left side of his body, and he is now recovering in an occupational rehab faclity. His representative, Rod McGrew, tells MTV.com, "Time will tell everything, obviously. The doctor can only guess what the outcome will be.
"But based on situations with similar people his age, and based on his health, the prognosis is good right now." According to McGrew, Hale did not suffer any brain damage from the stroke and his vocal chords have not been affected.
McGrew also took the opportunity to hit out at people who have made fun of the supposedly relaxed 911 call, which was posted on website TMZ.com earlier this week (ends18Jan08), adding: "I'm not sure what people are tying to glean from that tape. The diagnosis is what it is, and the prognosis is what it is: He had a stroke. The media wants to create something, but I'm not sure what the point is. If you had an emergency and someone was in your presence they would call 911.
"I'm not in a situation to see who is doing what, but rather tending to (Nate) and making sure he gets back on track."

The California Department of Public Health has officially cited Cedars Sinai Hospital for the massive drug overdosing of Dennis Quaid's newborn twins, HOLLYWOOD.TV learned today.
According to a report posted by The L.A. Times, the hospital blatantly failed to "adhere to established policies and procedures for safe medication use ... These violations caused, or were likely to cause, serious injury or death to the patients who received the wrong medication."
Add itionally, the report cites the hospital's general methods of operations "created a risk of harm for all hospital patients." The hospital staff and nurses have been found negligent in checking drug labels before patient administration.
Quaid's twins were given a whopping 10,000 units of Heparin, a blood thinner, TWICE! They are currently recovering at their home.

Dr. Phil has completed a one hour meeting with Britney Spears, related to her recent involuntary, 5150 hospitalization at Cedars-Sinai, connected with her wild custody situation on the evening of January 3rd.
"My meeting with Britney and some family members this morning in her
room at Cedars leaves me convinced more than ever that she is in dire
need of both medical and psychological intervention," the doctor reported to Entertainment Tonight and The Insider.
"She was released moments before my arrival and was packing when I
entered the room," Dr. Phil adds. "We visited for about an hour
before I walked with her to her car. I am very concerned for her."
Allegedly, the troubled Toxic chanteuse will be appearing on the doctor's daytime TV show next week. We'll see about that.
