The full version of the DEC aid appeal for Gaza which the BBC and Sky broadcasting channels have both refused to air.
Many people including former MP Tony Benn have accused the BBC of "capitulating" to the Israeli wish to hide their war crimes.

A behind the scenes look at how the BBC created the BBC iPlayer trailer for April Fools' Day, featuring a colony of flying penguins.
Hmpf! We see flying penguins all the time here in Hollywood!

It was bound to happen sooner or later, but TV regulator OFCOM has fired a shot across the bow of all broadcasters who are putting or planning to put UGC on air. Read the full article at The Guardian Unlimited.
SUMO.tv was in OFCOM's crosshairs, and has received a 'stern warning'. Whatever the merits of the case, its the brave digital broadcaster that gets the flak before the big boys (like the BBC's Upstaged or Be On TV initiatives on BBC3) get into the picture.

What do you think?

... this time, its for BBC3. They want show introductions (and, presumably, presenters eventually) and viewer opinions. On telly, someone (perhaps someone famous?) asks for submissions in a very low key manner. She sits on a sofa and does very little. Odd.

Upstaged is a new UGC/talent show from the BBC. It all seems fairly standard except for the requirement to be entertaining for 8 hours? Not sure how that is going to work.
Notice the way the sample videos are clearly labelled that they do not feature real contestants! BBC being ultra careful after all the recent scandals.

The latest issue of New Media Markets raises the timely issue of how UGC has been used on television so far, and the relative lack of success it has had.
MTV Europe's Flux: is now focussing on pro-am content. “What we discovered – which is pretty much what everyone has discovered – was that trying to put user-generated content on TV generally just doesn’t work,” said Heather Jones, senior vice president and managing director of music and comedy at MTV UK & Ireland.
The BBC has roped in Lenny Henry for an extremely traditional "let's-this-clip-and-laugh-at- it" UGC show called Lenny Henry.TV. I think it is terrible, and demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of the content and audience. Check out this clip to see for yourself.
Pure-play UGC-on-TV operations such as Cellcast's SUMO.tv and Current.TV seem to be having more success. SUMO.tv, besides creating content for its TV channel on Sky, mobile and web, is also rolling-out a B2B model: “Perhaps the real money is in B2B – providing the broadcasters with a white-label management system for video content.” - Colin Donald, principal consultant at Futurescape.
I'm going to round up clips of various UGC-on-TV shows from around the world, and let's see which ones really hit the mark ...

This is some really funny stuff.
Watch Victoria and David totally taken off guard by Ali-G's comedic interview, where he asks questions you'll never hear any other interviewer ask, ever.

Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares season premier is tonight at 8 pm/ET on BBC AMERICA. This is less sensational than Hell's Kitchen and a great show in my opinion. Ramsay does have a bit of a softer side, but still expects those he helps to work hard. The show takes Ramsay to a struggling restaurant where he has a short time to turn it around. He works with the owners and chefs to build a top notch dining experience.
